![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lepore’s overarching accomplishment lies in tracing this array of inspirations to their roots, untying this tangled and all but forgotten historical chain and then retracing it in riveting and accessible prose. All the sensationalism of her author’s lifestyle aside, that is the real secret history: the broad array of themes and inspirations which manifested themselves in the comic during its early years, and which for many contemporary readers probably still lie unknown. As a work of scholarship, it does a superb job of putting a literary – never mind comic superhero – character in her broader historical and social context. ![]() It’s hard to know where to begin in discussing this book, simply because it does so much. Suffering Sappho! Wonder Woman was the invention of a polyamorous, BDSM-practicing Harvard-educated psychologist who wanted women to rule the world and saw comics as propaganda to raise girls into strong empowered women? And nobody told me?įor those who grew up on the fairly tame Wonder Woman variants from the latter part of the 20th century, Jill Lepore’s masterful work of scholarship, The Secret History of Wonder Woman, will come across as nothing short of astonishing. ![]()

![]() I attribute this to being an early Lord of the Rings fan and viewing her Wizard of Earthsea series as a cheap imitation. Read moreĭespite reading well over a thousand books over the years, many of them science fiction, I somehow neglected Ursula LeGuin. Lathe of Heaven is also the first of Le Guin I’ve ever read, so I have no other experience with her work, but I did enjoy this first look. Without imperfection, there is no balance in the world. From my own first read and from other reviewers, I’m certain I’ll need to have a go at this book again sometime in the future. In that quest for perfection, however, they learn that they can’t account for every flaw and in turn create an alternative string of disasters. Rather than one man’s dreams influencing reality through a retelling, Le Guin imagines the main character’s dreams changing reality and his therapist’s attempt to steer those dreams in order to create a more perfect world. The central story, however, is the role of dreams and the impact one individual’s subconscious can have on reality. ![]() ![]() Written in 1971, Lathe of Heaven impressively projected the trends of the time into a turn-of-the-twenty-first century reality that foresaw the extremes of climate change and perpetual conflict among the major powers. Because of the morally grey and mysterious nature of the characters I think readers could choose different sides or a variety of ships.I found myself really enjoying all of the characters, but at the same time not knowing if I should trust any of them (which I also loved). It was more of “In a world where all everyone knows is war are anyone’s hands really clean”? It was serious Shadow and Bone vibes, Malachiasz and The Darkling may have to battle for my dark little heart… I thought the author did a great job of raising a lot of religious and moral questions without being pushy in either direction. I loved how dark this whole book was from the characters to the countries. Wicked Saints was so hyped I was nervous to read it as I thought there was no way it could live up to everything being said about it, but it did! Not to mention the gorgeous covers that were available! I am always a sucker for a pretty book. ![]() |
